About Christopher “WOW” Wong.

Chris Wong (he/him): A dancer, actor, choreographer, and artistic director. Chris merges STREET DANCE with a deep UNDERSTANDING OF stage & Film performances TO CRAFT CAPTIVATING PIECES.

Growing up in Hong Kong, Chris was inspired by late 90s and early 2000s pop icons such as Michael Jackson, Usher, NSYNC, and the Backstreet Boys. Relocating to Vancouver at age 13, he discovered and embraced dance wholeheartedly at 21. This newfound passion quickly led him to be voted as one of the city's Top 3 Dancers within a few years and shortly after he clinched a Top 4 spot in the house battle at the renowned Vancouver Street Dance Festival.

His dance style, a fusion of hip hop, house, popping, locking, and street jazz is enriched by his diverse training in places like LA, New York, and Tokyo, with a notable stint at the Street Style Lab Intensive in New York.

He's shared the stage with Janet Jackson during her Unbreakable tour and showcased his skills on screen in “The Twilight Zone”, "Legends of Tomorrow," and "Riverdale". Moreover, his acting skills shine through in hit comedy "Joyride," produced by Lionsgate. Beyond dancing, Chris has been an essential part of skeleton crews and has served as an assistant choreographer for TV shows and commercials.

In 2013, he established "Culturally Defined," an innovative hip hop dance company, which now resides at the CD Clubhouse, Vancouver's newest creative dance space. As the mastermind behind the CD Method, Chris is dedicated to nurturing versatile adult dancers, emphasizing that it's never too late to pursue a dance dream.

CELEBRATING LIFE THROUGH THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF DANCE.

The Why Behind My Steps

When I first landed in Vancouver from Hong Kong, the culture shock hit hard. It was a lot to adjust to and it was tough to make friends, I was dealing with my parent’s divorce and to top it off I got kicked by an adult while getting robbed shortly after arriving. This all came to a boiling point and it pushed me to find martial arts. Kickboxing became my sanctuary, providing a release and instilling confidence. However, outside of classes, I had a hard time channeling that energy productively, leading to a wild and rebellious teenage phase. Trouble became a constant companion.

Post-high school, I had a moment of reckoning. I recognized the dangerous path I was on and knew I had to pivot. That's when my buddies, thinking it might be a change of pace, introduced me to an open hip hop class. I walked in, thinking "open" might mean "beginner-friendly". Boy, was I wrong. I got my ass kicked. I was floundering and frolicking more than dancing. But instead of walking away defeated, that class lit a fire within. As I dove deeper into this art form, I began to discover layers of myself I hadn't known.

Dance is more than just movement for me; it is what I need and it's introspection in action. Every step, twist, and turn has offered me deeper self-understanding. Through sharing my journey, I hope to encourage others to carve out moments, to connect and truly understand themselves.

 Much love,

CW
